Management Team

UnboundID's management team includes industry veterans and identity management experts who together have decades of experience in dealing with large-scale identity management deployments.

Steve Shoaff, CEO and Founder

Steve defines the vision and overall business strategy for UnboundID. He is inter-nationally recognized as a trusted adviser on identity and security issues for Global 100 companies. At Sun Microsystems, he served as Technical Director and Chief of Staff for the Identity Management product division, as well as Director of Global Engineering and Support for the Directory Server Product Family. At Netscape Communications, he was Sr. Product Manager for Directory and Security. He co-founded the OpenDS and SLAMD open source projects and performs technical due-diligence for venture capital firms. He has also been a key technical adviser to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Emeka Obianwu, Vice President of Business Development

Emeka Obianwu leads partner, channel and other market expansion opportunities for the UnboundID Directory Services 2.0 software platform. Prior to joining UnboundID, Emeka led Corporate Development for Troux Technologies, where he built strategic go-to-market alliances. Previously, he oversaw Business Development at BuildForge, which was acquired by IBM in 2006. Following the acquisition, Emeka worked with the IBM Rational business development team to identify new growth markets and channels for the IBM Rational brand. He is a seasoned executive in enterprise software and strategy consulting, and holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.

Andy Land, Director of Product Management

With over 12 years of proven success, Andy Land provides strategic product management and marketing direction for UnboundID. Previously, Andy served as Senior Director of Product Management at Alterpoint, an Austin-based network change and configuration management software company. His responsibilities included product strategy, marketing and direction. Prior to Alterpoint, Andy was Director of Product Management at Sun Microsystems where he helped guide the company's identity products to leadership in the identity-management market. His background also includes broad-based experience in product management and sales at Motive, Vignette, Verizon, and Abbott Laboratories. Andy began his career as a United States Naval Officer and is a veteran of the first Gulf War. He is active in the Austin community, serving on the board of directors for Heart House, a non-profit, after-school program for children.

Steve Almquist, Global Sales Director

Steve Almquist brings to UnboundID over 25 years experience of successfully selling to Global 2000 companies, and has held various worldwide and regional sales management positions. Most recently Mr. Almquist was responsible for identity management software sales for Sun Microsystems telecommunications accounts. There he received the company's highest sales honor when he was named the U.S. Software Sales Representative of the Year for both 2006 and 2008. Previously he held several sales and management positions with Netscape Communications from 1995-1999, where he was the North Central Regional Manager and later became the Central U.S. VP of Sales. Before joining Netscape, Steve worked for Borland International.

David Ely, Director of Engineering and Founder

A first-class software engineer, David excels at delivering high-quality products, both as a developer and a manager. Prior to co-founding UnboundID, David served at Sun Microsystems, where his talent and expertise were proven as a contributor and team leader for the development of highly-reliable, high-scale, secure, distributed applications. These applications centered on identity management within the enterprise and on the extranet. During his tenure at Sun, David also served as the engineering manager for OpenDS and as the technical lead for two products: Identity Manager Service Provider Edition and Identity Synchronization for Windows.

Neil Wilson, Chief Architect and Founder

Neil Wilson has nearly ten years of experience in virtually all areas of directory services. Before co-founding UnboundID, Neil was the architect and lead developer of the OpenDS project at Sun Microsystems, Inc. While at Sun, he wrote a number of popular directory-related tools such as the SLAMD Distributed Load Generation Engine, MakeLDIF, and LDAPDecoder. He also designed the distribution mechanism for the Sun Java System Directory Proxy Server and worked to analyze and improve the performance and scalability of the Sun Java System Directory Server. He has strong real-world experience with a number of large directory deployments from his interactions with customers at Sun and from his previous position as lead technical support engineer for the iPlanet Directory Server at Netscape Communications. Prior to joining Netscape, Neil was a directory administrator at TidePoint Corp. and a web and directory server administrator at Caterpillar, Inc.

Don Bowen, Founder

Don Bowen is a leading expert in the field of identity management with more than 29 years of IT experience, the last 11 focused on the identity space. He provides extensive experience in consulting with Fortune 500 companies, helping them build and manage their marketing and product management activities for identity software and solutions. Prior to UnboundID, Don served as Distinguished Marketing Director and Director of Identity Integration at Sun Microsystems for their Identity Suite. He has also been a Principal Consultant at Burton Group where he assisted major enterprises in defining and developing their identity management strategies. In addition, he was Chief Directory Architect at Caterpillar Inc. and led the architecture, design, and implementation of their global directory service and enterprise single sign-on (ESSO) capabilities. A co-founder of the OpenDS project, Don has been a speaker and panel member at many identity management events.
